Ramage, 67, was the first overall pick in the 1979 NHL Draft. He spent 12 seasons with the Canadiens in various development roles.

He served three years as a development coach before transitioning to director of player development for the final nine seasons.

During his tenure, he oversaw the progression of franchise prospects and managed the annual post-draft development camp.

Canadiens president of hockey operations Jeff Gorton announced the departure. Gorton praised Ramage for establishing high standards within the organization's development culture.

"On behalf of the entire organization, we would like to thank Rob for everything that he did for our team during the past 12 years, and we want to wish him all the best in his future projects," Gorton said.

"Rob was a key part of what we established here as far as our development culture, which we wanted to elevate to the highest standards in the NHL," he added.

Ramage remained a key figure in the front office through recent management transitions, including the exit of former general manager Marc Bergevin.

His retirement opens potential front-office adjustments. Development coach Francis Bouillon is a likely candidate to succeed Ramage.
