An Extreme Heat Warning remained in effect across the entire Susquehanna Valley on Friday, July 3, 2026, as high humidity and triple-digit temperatures pushed heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees, according to a report by WGAL.

Weather monitoring recorded air temperatures reaching 98 degrees in Harrisburg, 96 in Lancaster, and 97 in Lebanon.

Even the regional cool spot of Lewistown reached 91 degrees with a perceived heat index of 100 degrees, affecting communities including York, Carlisle, Gettysburg, and Chambersburg.

Meteorologists projected afternoon highs to reach up to 102 degrees, matching consecutive peak temperatures not recorded in Harrisburg since 1999.

Overnight low temperatures also broke historical records, dipping only to 81 degrees and surpassing the previous record low of 79 degrees set in 2002.

Extended Warnings and Advisories

The extreme heat conditions led authorities to extend the Extreme Heat Warning for Lancaster, York, Adams, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties until 8 p.

m. Saturday.

Meanwhile, Franklin, Mifflin, Juniata, Perry, and Cumberland counties were placed under a Heat Advisory effective from Friday evening through Saturday evening, with expected heat index values between 100 and 104 degrees.

The national weather forecasting models also indicated a slight risk for spotty afternoon showers and isolated thunderstorms carrying potential damaging winds between 3 p.

m. and 10 p.

m. on both Friday and Saturday.

A more definitive shift in the regional weather pattern is expected to arrive on Sunday, bringing a higher probability of thunderstorms and lowering high temperatures back into the 80s by Monday and Tuesday.
