Egypt defeated Australia 4-2 on penalty kicks following a 1-1 draw on Friday, July 3, 2026, eliminating the Socceroos from the World Cup round of 32 in Arlington, Texas.

Australia head coach Tony Popovic made late tactical changes by substituting goalkeeper Patrick Beach for veteran Mathew Ryan before the shootout and selecting 18-year-old defender Lucas Herrington as the final kicker.

Ryan, making his 105th international appearance, failed to stop any of Egypt's four shots, while Herrington missed his penalty, setting up the game-deciding goal by Hossam Abdelmaguid.

Popovic defended his decision, highlighting the young defender's previous contributions under pressure.

"I trust him to play in a game that we needed to get a result against Paraguay, and a game where elimination was on the line.

What's the difference with a penalty?" Popovic said.

The coach also addressed the late goalkeeper switch, noting that Ryan was subbed in for the 22-year-old Beach, who had made key saves during regulation.

"It didn't work, so we can look at many things in the reasons behind it, but with Matty's experience and, I think, if you looked at his record in saving penalties, Patrick is new as a goalkeeper not just with the national team, but even in club football," Popovic stated.

The tactical move ultimately did not pay off despite the veteran keeper's historical record.
