The governor's communications team issued an aggressive series of statements online, calling the investigation a lawless expedition and denying any institutional connections to the informant's recording activities.
"There is no evidence that the alleged use of a wire on one of the FBI's informants is in any way connected to the Governor," posted the Governor's Press Office.
Press officials maintained that the criminal activities uncovered by federal investigators did not involve the executive office.
"That investigation had nothing to do with the Governor," posted the Governor's Press Office.
Administration officials further disputed the media's characterization of Podesta as a close political ally within the governor's immediate circle, citing the scale of state appointments.
"Under the Post's theory, every one of the more than 2,000 appointees to boards and commissions is somehow an 'ally' and in the political orbit of the Governor," wrote officials from the Governor's Press Office.
Podesta was appointed by Newsom to the State Compensation Insurance Fund board in 2020, a position that pays nearly $61,000 annually, and she remains active in that role.
