Alex de Minaur advanced to the Wimbledon Round of 16 on Saturday, defeating American Zach Svajda 6-2, 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in a third-round match.

The world number 6 needed 2 hours and 41 minutes to secure the victory at the All England Club.

This marks the third consecutive year the Australian has reached the second week of the tournament.

Svajda's 'Aussie slayer' reputation

Svajda entered the match with a reputation as an "Aussie slayer," having previously defeated Australians Alexei Popyrin and Adam Walton at the French Open earlier this year.

However, de Minaur proved too strong, breaking Svajda four times in the third set.

The American required a medical timeout for his left thigh during the third set.

De Minaur controlled the final set to seal the win.

"This almost feels like an Aussie court.

It's been amazing playing on this court," de Minaur said, energized by the "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" chants from the crowd.

He praised his 23-year-old opponent, calling him a "hell of a player."

"He's quite awkward, plays great tennis from both sides, he's got one of the best running cross-court forehands I've ever seen," de Minaur added.

The Australian noted he had to maintain a high level of performance. "I played really well to hang in there," he said.
