Timmermans said his confidence in leading the Netherlands is based on a self-assessment of his capabilities and extensive political experience.
His career includes multiple domestic ministerial positions and high-level roles within the European Union, which he believes prepared him for the highest office.

The political leader stepped away from the national spotlight immediately after the election results became clear.
He noted that the decision to step down was finalized the moment the initial exit polls were released.

Jesse Klaver came in a bit later and I told him: this is what I am going to do now – take my responsibility and step down as leader," Timmermans stated.
Following his resignation, Timmermans experienced a drastic shift in his daily routine, which he likened to a sports car abruptly coming to a halt.
He now spends his time cooking, cycling long distances, writing, and recording podcasts in his home workspace.
Despite teaching at international universities in Oxford, Florence, and Bologna, and participating in an Indonesian conservation mission, he remains without a permanent position.
