Netflix will premiere a new adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie" on July 9, 2026, with the story set in Independence, Kansas, rather than the familiar Walnut Grove.
The series, a joint production with CBS Studios, draws directly from the original books rather than remaking the 1970s NBC television show.

A Fresh Take on the Frontier
Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine and executive producer Joy Gorman Wettels developed the project to explore historical realities and perspectives that earlier versions overlooked.
The first season follows the Ingalls family—Charles, Caroline, Mary, and Laura—as they build their home on the Kansas prairie, based on the third book of Wilder's series.
"A lot of people consider them children's literature, but I really do think they're really about sort of how America became America," Sonnenshine said.
She described the story as centered on personal transformation and the search for a better life.

"It's about people deciding who they want to be, and it's about people looking for a better life," Sonnenshine told Tudum.
"You always have a chance to reinvent and to rediscover who you are."
The cast includes Luke Bracey as Charles, Crosby Fitzgerald as Caroline, Skywalker Hughes as Mary, and Alice Halsey as Laura.
