A massive municipal snow pile at the Barrie Operations Centre in Barrie, Ontario, remains standing as of July 5, 2026, despite a recent summer heat wave across the region.

Local officials used heavy equipment over the winter to significantly compress the gathered snowfall, which extended its melting timeline into mid-summer.

Winter Snowfall and Compaction

The city cleared 400 to 500 centimeters of snow during the 2025-26 winter season, with transportation workers hauling more than 9,000 dump-truck loads to storage sites.

That volume translated to approximately 180,000 cubic meters of snow deposited at the facilities, according to municipal captions shared on Facebook.

As reported by CTV News on July 3, 2026, the remaining mound maintains a height of roughly 18 feet and a width of 100 feet.

At its peak during the winter months, the pile reached nearly seven stories tall and was visible to motorists traveling along Highway 400.

Dave Friary, the director of operations for Barrie, explained that changed management techniques directly contributed to the longevity of the snow pile into July.

"We actually brought in a bulldozer to compact it similar to what we do at the landfill," said Friary, in an interview with CTV News.

The compaction process increased the overall density of the mound, preventing rapid thawing as regional temperatures climbed.

Weather records show the city has logged nine days with temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, alongside a consecutive 60-day stretch where local temperatures stayed above freezing.

"And we're still holding onto that snow," said Kevin MacKay, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

The final remnants and associated road debris continue to melt at the municipal works yard located on Ferndale Drive.

City officials estimate the entire pile will dissolve completely before the August long weekend.
