A psychotherapist reports that imposing strict limits on smartphone use and banning social media can dramatically enhance mood and strengthen family bonds.

Anna Mathur, a psychotherapist and author, shared her personal journey of overcoming digital distraction to become a more present mother, as reported by The Guardian.

Mathur admitted she used to check her phone hundreds of times daily, viewing it as a coping mechanism and a source of productivity that motherhood did not immediately offer.

However, she realized that scrolling through social media, which felt like decompression, was actually placing a heavy demand on her already exhausted mind.

The turning point occurred when she noticed a physical spike of irritation and a sharpness in her voice whenever her three children interrupted her mid-scroll.

She discovered that impulse control weakens during chronic stress, poor sleep, or hormonal changes like perimenopause, making the pull of the phone a biological challenge rather than a flaw in character.

To solve this, Mathur bypassed willpower and used an app blocker to restrict access to social media and email during the hours her children are at home.

She also established a habit of narrating her phone use out loud to remain accountable, ensuring she only handles necessary tasks like adding items to a shopping list.

The reduction in screen time led to an unexpected sense of calm, lowering overstimulation and allowing her nervous system to rest properly.

Instead of doomscrolling in the evenings, Mathur now reads comic books while her children watch television, which keeps her calm even when interrupted.

Improved Marriage and Parenting

This digital boundary also enhanced her marriage, replacing side-by-side phone usage with deep, undivided attention and daily conversations with her husband.

Her children now experience a relaxed parent, prompting them to share small details about their days and cuddle more frequently.

Anna Mathur detailed these insights in her book, How to Stop Snapping at the People You Love, published by Penguin Life.
