The Washington Commanders have agreed to a one-year contract with veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas, a move that strengthens their defensive secondary.

The deal, finalized on Monday, July 6, 2026, is worth up to $3.8 million.

Commanders General Manager Adam Peters secured the agreement just weeks before the team reports to training camp.

The signing addresses a primary offseason concern for the franchise, as analysts had projected the need to stabilize the defensive unit's performance floor.

Douglas, who will turn 32 before the upcoming season, brings size and veteran experience to Washington's defensive backfield.

He is expected to provide versatility, with the ability to play in the slot and contribute to run defense.

The cornerback joins the Commanders after a bounce-back season with the Miami Dolphins.

In 2025, he played on a $1.57 million contract and established himself as Miami's top-performing cornerback.

According to team records, Douglas recorded 62 combined tackles, two interceptions, 13 passes defended, and one sack across 15 appearances and 13 starts.

He also added two forced fumbles, two tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits.

Despite his production, the Dolphins showed no interest in retaining Douglas.

Longtime Dolphins reporter Barry Jackson noted that Miami's decision-makers extended no contract offers to the veteran during free agency.

The Dolphins are shifting their roster strategy under new General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan and head coach Jeff Hafley.

The front office is executing a rebuild that prioritizes younger, less expensive players.

Miami opted to let Douglas walk despite fielding a secondary room with mostly inexperienced and unproven players.

To replace him, the Dolphins used their second first-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Chris Johnson from San Diego State.
