US President Donald Trump held separate, extensive telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy over the weekend of July 4, 2026, offering American mediation to rapidly end the conflict ahead of the upcoming NATO summit in Turkey.
The intensive diplomatic engagement coincided with escalating battlefield actions, including a deadly Russian missile strike on Kyiv and successful Ukrainian drone strikes against multiple Russian oil infrastructure targets.

Kremlin Confirms Trump's Mediation Offer
Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov stated that Trump proposed the diplomatic assistance during a 90-minute call on Saturday, which marked the 250th anniversary of US independence.
"The American president once again confirmed his readiness to work towards a rapid end to the fighting and find solutions to overcome the crisis," said Ushakov.
The Russian administration characterized the dialogue as highly functional and focused on long-term geopolitical stabilization.
"There are enormous prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation between our countries.
To achieve this, Donald Trump emphasized, it would be necessary to end the Ukrainian conflict as soon as possible," Ushakov told reporters.
The Kremlin reiterated its long-standing requirement that any peaceful resolution requires Kyiv to yield complete control over the eastern Donbas region.
"The Russian side once again emphasized the preference for a political and diplomatic resolution to the conflict," according to the foreign ministry.
Moscow also utilized the discussion to criticize the defensive and military strategies employed by Ukraine and its European coalition partners.
