Belgium advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals with a 4-1 victory over the United States in Seattle on July 6, 2026.
The match was overshadowed by political tension after the American president intervened to overturn a suspension for US forward Folarin Balogun.

Belgian captain Youri Tielemans said the political interference provided extra motivation for his team. Balogun started for the US but struggled to make an impact.
"That was an extra boost," Tielemans told VRT. "It gave us extra fire.
We wanted to show that what happens on the field is what matters."
Legal Concerns Raised
FIFA reversed Balogun's suspension after a direct phone call from the US president.
Sports law experts warned that fielding an ineligible player could create regulatory risks for the host nation.

"This is a point that deserves more attention," said sports law attorney Dolf Segaar.
"If Balogun plays, the US beats Belgium, and an appeals committee later says he wasn't eligible, the result becomes uncertain."
Legal expert Tim Wilms noted that governing bodies can impose retrospective penalties if an ineligible player participates.
Belgium controlled the game with goals from Charles De Ketelaere, Hans Vanaken, and Romelu Lukaku.
