Relations have been strained since Trump threatened to take control of Greenland from Denmark and failed to consult European leaders regarding military strikes on Iran.

The US also intends to reduce its military personnel and aircraft assigned to Europe by one-third in the event of conflict.

Former NATO spokesperson Oana Lungescu provided insights into the expected summit outcome. She described the final communique as “probably a one pager.”

Lungescu noted that the document would focus on restating core principles and reasons for the alliance's existence. “Restate some of those fundamentals,” she said.

The current draft text explicitly reaffirms an ironclad commitment to Article 5, which views an attack on one member as an attack on all.

When asked about indicators of a successful summit, Lungescu outlined diplomatic and financial benchmarks. She cited “no angry outbursts from president Trump” as a key sign.

She added that success would also require visible solidarity and increased financial commitments for defense. “A reaffirmation of alliance unity,” Lungescu said.

The final requirement involves securing more funding for procurement contracts and support for Ukraine. “A lot more money,” she stated.
