England shifted into defensive block formations that neutralized Mexico's cross-heavy tactics after manager Javier Aguirre substituted winger Julian Quinones for striker Guillermo Martinez.
Earlier in the tournament, organizers launched the expanded 48-team, 39-day competition with three distinct opening ceremonies across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
"The ceremonies' unifying theme was 'the celebration of sports, the passion for soccer, symbolized by the cup itself,'" Marco Balich, creative director of Milan-based Balich Wonder Studio, told The Associated Press.
The creative team used varying cultural motifs, integrating a multicultural mosaic for Canada, traditional papel picado cutouts for Mexico, and a glowing aesthetic for the United States tournament kickoff.
"The idea is to narrate with three points of view and languages" using design aesthetics representative of each culture, Balich said.
The United States portion of the opening ceremony took place at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, featuring musical performances by Katy Perry, Future, Anitta, LISA, Rema, and Tyla prior to the opening match against Paraguay.
