Severe storms and a landslide killed at least 15 people and left 16 others buried across western and central China on Tuesday, prompting emergency rescue operations.

Thunderstorms and powerful winds caused 11 fatalities and injured 331 people in Hubei province, where intense weather damaged thousands of homes.

Chinese state news agency Xinhua described the event as severe convective weather, characterized by sudden onset and intense, short-duration winds.

In the southern region of Guangxi, Typhoon Maysak brought torrential rain that breached local dams, killing four people and leaving eight missing.

A separate landslide in Gansu province buried 33 people, with partial rescue operations successfully saving some victims, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered emergency teams to mobilize immediately and maximize rescue operations to save victims trapped by the severe weather.

Local officials in Gansu deployed resources to manage the aftermath and prevent secondary disasters, including properly relocating affected residents.
