Reflecting on his departure after a 13-year tenure with the franchise that drafted him in 2013, Antetokounmpo expressed mixed emotions regarding his first career team change.
He admitted that the prospect of leaving his long-term basketball home brought significant personal apprehension.
“I’m scared that the grass is not always greener. … People love me here,” said Antetokounmpo.
The forward elaborated on the deep comfort and acceptance he experienced within the Wisconsin community throughout his career.
“People respect me here. People allow me to be myself here in the city.
And I’m scared that I might never find that ever again,” he said.
Despite these anxieties, the champion noted that the fear of future professional regret drove his desire for a new competitive environment.
“I’m scared that maybe if I don’t take that decision, that when I’m going to be 37, 38 years old, hopefully and I’m retiring, I’m going to say: ‘Why?
Why didn’t you take that risk?’” said Antetokounmpo.
Antetokounmpo emphasized that his emotional connection to the city remains unchanged despite the trade.
“The city of Milwaukee will always be in my heart,” he said.
