Film critics have praised Christopher Nolan's historical epic The Odyssey following its world premiere in London on Monday night, positioning the three-hour production as a major contender for the Best Picture Oscar.

The film, shot entirely using large-format IMAX film cameras, adapts Homer's ancient epic poem.

It needs at least $500 million globally to break even against its estimated $250 million production budget and worldwide promotional tour expense.

Initial reactions from early screenings in the UK and US yielded high praise for the cinematic scale, production design, and specific cast performances.

Reviewers singled out unexpected thematic elements alongside its commercial box office prospects.

Guardian reviewer Peter Bradshaw highlighted the structural depth of the production ahead of the official reviews embargo lifting next Wednesday.

"Christopher Nolan's Odyssey is a colossal origin-myth story of postwar disillusion and a loss of innocence witnessed by the dead," Bradshaw said.

IndieWire editor-at-large Anne Thompson focused on the award potential of the project and its lead actor, noting that her high expectations were met by the stunningly mounted production.

"My high expectations were met," Thompson added.

Industry pundit Erik Davis evaluated the technical scope and genre elements used in the historical piece.

"An absolute triumph and a crowning cinematic achievement from one of the great filmmakers of our time.

It feels like everything Nolan has been working toward with IMAX has culminated here," Davis said.

Davis noted that the director effectively incorporated unsettling elements into the storytelling framework.
