Planned Parenthood and two smaller regional reproductive healthcare providers have resumed billing Medicaid for non-abortion services after being cut off for nearly a year, as reported by The Guardian.

The federal defunding, mandated by Donald Trump's policy in July 2025, led to multiple clinic closures and a significant reduction in patient screenings for breast cancer and sexually transmitted infections.

The restoration of Medicaid billing privileges went into effect on Sunday, though healthcare advocates note that federal policy battles continue and many lost services will not return.

Reproductive healthcare providers have faced severe financial struggles following the 2022 US Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe v.

Wade, causing clinic closures across various states.

Planned Parenthood reported that its affiliates shut down nearly 30 of their approximately 600 clinics over the past year, directly blaming the policy change for the financial strain.

During the defunding period, affiliates distributed 25% fewer birth control pill packs and conducted 20% fewer breast cancer examinations compared to the previous year.

The organization stated that many patients, particularly those living in areas with limited healthcare access, likely went without necessary care during the funding suspension.

Angela Vasquez-Giroux, a spokesperson for Planned Parenthood Action Fund, stated that the budget cuts also restricted abortion access in several regions.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin temporarily halted abortions for a month before dropping its status as an “essential community provider” to resume seeking financial reimbursements.

The Arizona affiliate also paused many services for Medicaid patients, but has now announced expanded hours and increased telehealth options following the funding restoration.
