The alliance faces a turbulent diplomatic landscape following a graphic posted by Trump on his Truth Social platform that contrasted the US defense budget of $999 million with lower European contributions, labeling the arrangement as "ridiculous" and "one-sided."

In response to the funding disparities, Washington plans to reduce the troop numbers and military equipment it designates for Europe in the event of a conflict with Russia.
Rutte Calls for Urgent Action
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the need for member states to demonstrate immediate, decisive action regarding their financial commitments.

"President Trump fully expects that all allies will step up immediately and get on the path to 5% and do it with urgency," said Rutte.
The spending friction is compounded by broader geopolitical strains, including Trump's failure to consult European allies before launching economically disruptive military strikes on Iran alongside Israel, as well as his public grievances against countries like the United Kingdom for denying US jets airspace to execute those strikes.
