Health authorities urged Kamloops residents on Tuesday to prepare for deteriorating air quality caused by regional wildfires, warning of elevated health risks for vulnerable populations.

Dr. Janice Mok, a public health officer with Interior Health, said those with chronic conditions are at highest risk.

These include respiratory conditions such as COPD or asthma, and cardiovascular conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease.

Dr. Mok noted that individuals might experience symptoms like coughing and shortness of breath even if they initially feel no effects from the smoke.

Health officials advised residents to monitor air quality indices, reduce strenuous outdoor activities, and seek medical attention if symptoms become severe during the upcoming hot and dry weather periods.

It offers such helpful advice… both for the general population and for people at risk such that it can really support people in making decisions about what they want to do, modifying their activities,” Dr. Mok added.

According to regional reports, Kamloops residents face multiple stretches of smoke due to the Riley Creek wildfire near Lillooet and the Brunswick Creek fire near Boston Bar.

Additionally, the Heartland Air Monitoring Partnership reported that incoming wildfire smoke from northern Saskatchewan caused the region's first high and very high air quality ratings of the year between June 29 and July 1, before conditions quickly recovered.
