The San Francisco Giants are preparing for the 2026 MLB Draft with a clear strategy: take the best player available, regardless of position.

General manager Zack Minasian emphasized that drafting for immediate Major League needs is impractical given development timelines.

Positional Need Won't Drive Early Picks

“I think we lean best player available,” Minasian said.

“To sit here and say, ‘Oh, we should take a first baseman in the first round’ doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for us.”

Minasian noted that limiting the talent pool based on need only complicates the process. “Need being the worst evaluator,” he said.

“If you’re going to limit your talent pool, you’re just going to make it harder on yourself.”

The Giants hold the fourth overall pick and an additional selection at 29th, acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in the Patrick Bailey trade.

President of baseball operations Buster Posey expressed optimism about the extra pick. “We’re going to have some access to some really talented players.

It should be good,” he said.

While the team prioritizes talent, Minasian acknowledged that positional depth could break ties between similarly ranked prospects.

“There’s going to be players that we evaluate as being very, very close to each other,” he said.

“You might see need win out in those types of conversations, but I don’t know if you push any particular player way up the board because they play a certain position.”
