Paisley had been battling severe pneumonia for 42 days before his death, according to his partner, Ti Hallas.

Hallas said Paisley "peacefully let go" surrounded by the love of family and friends.

A crowdfunding campaign helped cover his private medical care and allowed relatives to connect with him via video calls.

"You sent prayers and encouragement and messages and donations. It didn't save him, but it helped him have a dignified and gentle death," Hallas said.

From a Small Grant to a Global Festival

Paisley launched the fringe festival in 1982 with a grant from the City of Edmonton.

It has since grown into North America's oldest, largest, and longest-running fringe theatre festival.

Murray Utas, artistic director of Fringe Theatre, recalled that Paisley initially doubted the event would succeed. "He didn't think it was going to work," Utas said.

But by the second year, crowds packed Old Strathcona, and Paisley realized he needed to keep audiences engaged between shows.

The festival now attracts about 500,000 people each August.

Utas described Paisley as "Father Fringe" and a mentor. "There's so much more I need to learn from you and I want more stories," Utas said.

Paisley's model eliminated traditional gatekeepers, letting artists decide what to perform. "It asked artists, what do you want to do instead of artists being told what to do?"

said longtime theatre critic Liz Nicholls.

The Alberta Foundation of the Arts called Paisley's impact "immeasurable" and credited him with starting a movement that spread across Canada.

In a 2011 interview, Paisley said the festival's longevity amazed him. "You throw a party, and 30 years later, it's still going on.

They just won't go home," he said.
