Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc secured victory at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday, July 5, 2026, capitalising on a late-race safety car that triggered widespread controversy among fans and analysts after an erroneous restart message was displayed.

Leclerc led the closing laps of the race after Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli suffered a mechanical failure on lap 41.

The safety car was subsequently deployed on lap 48 of 52 when Red Bull driver Max Verstappen became stranded in the gravel trap at Stowe corner due to an active rear wing malfunction.

The race finished under caution after the unlapping procedure prolonged the safety car period on the long circuit.

An automated on-screen message erroneously announced that the safety car would return to the pit lane on lap 51, drawing brief cheers from the crowd before being corrected eight seconds later, resulting in heavy boos from the grandstands.

The victory marked the end of a long winless drought for Leclerc, who had faced immense pressure and performance questions relative to his teammate Lewis Hamilton earlier in the season.

"It means a lot," said Leclerc.

"It means a lot because when things get tough, and that's literally the situation I've been in the last few races, obviously there's a lot of negativity around me in general, with narratives being created, and it's never a nice environment to work in."

Leclerc revealed that he had intentionally disconnected from digital media during his recent performance struggles to maintain his focus.
