Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe expressed enthusiasm for the transfer, noting Steur's prior experience in both the Eredivisie and the UEFA Champions League.

"We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come," Howe said.

According to Opta data, Steur ranked first among Eredivisie midfielders aged 18 or younger for chances created, total carries, and duel success rate during the campaign.

Howe highlighted the player's strong background at Ajax, an academy renowned for producing exceptional footballing prospects. "Sean is an exciting addition to our squad.

He's had an excellent upbringing at Ajax, who have an outstanding track record of producing young players," he added.

Newcastle Sporting Director Ross Wilson stated that European football circles were widely aware of Steur's talent, making swift action necessary.

"We've been aware of his talent for some time but so has the rest of European football, so it was vital that we were able to act diligently," Wilson said.

Wilson added that the swift progression of the transfer reflects the attractiveness of the long-term project at Newcastle United.

"It's testament to the project we're working on here that players like Sean are so keen to join," he said.

The arrival marks the third senior signing for the club this summer, following French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen and Ivorian winger Bazoumana Touré.

The influx of young talent follows a shift in strategy necessitated by financial regulations, leading to the high-value departures of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and Anthony Gordon to Barcelona.

Steur previously received the Abdelhak Nouri Trophy as Ajax's top academy talent, following former winners such as Christian Eriksen and Ryan Gravenberch.
