A severe thunderstorm on Wednesday night, July 8, 2026, knocked out electrical infrastructure and caused widespread power outages across Saskatoon and surrounding municipalities.

Municipal crews worked through the night to restore critical services after high winds and torrential conditions toppled numerous trees and compromised utility lines.

Saskatoon Light & Power and SaskPower mobilized emergency repair teams.

The blackout affected Riversdale, King George, Caswell Hill, North City Park, the entire west and south sides of Saskatoon outside Circle Drive, as well as Clavet, Allan, Blucher, Vonda, and Aberdeen.

Safety Warnings Issued

Local officials warned motorists that traffic signals might remain inactive during the morning commute, advising drivers to treat all dark intersections as four-way stops.

"Treat all non-functioning traffic lights as four-way stops and watch for crews working near roadways," the city said in a statement.

Municipal authorities also issued safety warnings regarding damaged electrical infrastructure. "Customers are also reminded to stay clear of any downed power lines and report hazardous situations immediately.

Assume all downed lines are energized and dangerous," the city said.

Trevor Bell, director of Saskatoon Light & Power, confirmed that approximately 100 utility workers were deployed to assess and repair localized damage.

"We have a number of power outages within our area that we have been working on through the night, but there are still some that are out this morning," Bell said.
