Chery is developing a compact crossover pickup inspired by the Ford Maverick, according to patent images filed in South Africa.

The unibody truck targets markets outside North America, including China, South America, South Africa, and parts of Asia-Pacific.

Design and Styling

The pickup features a muscular crossover look with a full-width LED daytime running light and bold 'Chery' lettering.

Chunky lower cladding, aluminum skid plate elements, and a dark bumper emphasize off-road utility.

In profile, it has a short cargo bed, four doors with hidden rear handles, and a high beltline.

Deeply sculpted doors flow into squared-off wheel arches, while a contrasting black roof and sports bar add visual flair.

The rear includes full-width LED taillamps, an upright tailgate, textured bumper inserts, and faux skid-plating.

Interior and Platform

The cabin likely mirrors recent Chery launches like the Stockman, featuring a large freestanding infotainment display, digital instrument cluster, wireless phone mirroring, and over-the-air updates.

Premium touches may include high-grade plastics, heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic glass roof, and ambient lighting.

The compact bed prioritizes versatility with stowable seating and rear pass-through loading for longer items.

Underpinning the pickup is the T1X unibody architecture with independent rear suspension for car-like handling, rather than a ladder frame.

Powertrain and Hybrid Options

Entry-level variants could use a 1.6-liter turbo four-cylinder or a 208 hp (155 kW) 2.0-liter turbo for flagship models.

Plug-in hybrid capability is expected via Chery's Super Hybrid (CSH) system, combining a 1.5-liter turbo engine with an electric motor for up to 56 miles (90 km) of electric range.

Front and all-wheel-drive options are likely, along with Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality.

Rivals and Launch Timeline

The Chery Ute will compete with the Fiat Toro, Chevrolet Montana, Ram Rampage, VW Tukan, and Toyota's unnamed Corolla Cross Ute.
