"For most people it was just downright ugly," said Don Sherman, a journalist and auto historian.
While the Edsel cost Ford approximately $350 million in losses at the time, equivalent to $2.5 billion today, industry experts note that the Cybertruck's target deficit is proportionally larger.
"In the end, the Edsel failure cost Ford about $350 million in losses, or $2.5 billion in modern dollars," noted Bethany Benjamin, the writer at Bloomberg.
"Yet many collectors today appreciate the Edsel's novelty and pay up to $35,000 for restored models."
Despite the declining figures, market analysts doubt Tesla will officially discontinue the Cybertruck line in the immediate future.
"It's possible that they try to do some sort of redesign, or come up with a different variant to try to boost sales," said Garrett Nelson, an equity analyst at CFRA Research, "but we think that would really be a futile effort."

Tesla's overall stock traded down 30.39% year-to-date as of late July 2026, with full-year capital expenditure targeted at over $25 billion toward artificial intelligence infrastructure, Cybercab development, and robotics.
