Monks noted that heat stress on grain will eventually push up consumer prices for basic foodstuffs.
"Even cupboard staples which are often viewed as relatively wallet-friendly could see a price rise as wheat and barley crops come under heat stress," she said.
She indicated that while price changes might not be immediate, consumers will feel the impact if dry conditions persist.
"Shoppers may not notice price hikes immediately, but if the hot and dry weather continues, they could notice it within a couple of months," Monks said.
She explained that retail chains will turn overseas to maintain inventory standards.

"Larger supermarket chains will want full, healthy crops, and if they can't find it on home soil, they may begin to import produce from abroad," she said.
Monks concluded that the additional expenses of import logistics will ultimately land on retail customers.
"Certain crops and produce items will start to be imported if it becomes necessary, and the cost of that will likely be passed down to the customer," she said.
Andrew Opie, Director of Food & Sustainability Policy at the British Retail Consortium, stated that retailers are actively managing supply disruptions.
"Extreme weather, including drought, can affect crop yields and place upward pressure on prices," Opie said.
He assured that supply chains are adjusting to mitigate consumer impacts.
"Retailers are experienced in managing supply disruptions and will take all necessary steps, including sourcing from alternative suppliers where appropriate, to minimise any impact on customers," he said.
