Hairston Makes History
Sophomore outfielder Landon Hairston hit his 28th home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, breaking the single-season home run record in Arizona State program history.
The record was previously held by Mitch Jones, who hit 27 home runs in 2000.
"It was a big weight off my shoulders," said Hairston, the Big 12 Player of the Year. "I knew right when it left the bat, it was going."
Hairston, an Arizona native and semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy, entered the tournament leading the nation with a 1.438 OPS and .
911 slugging percentage.
"Now, it's just go out and play and give it your all," Hairston added. "You're not worrying about external things anymore."
Before breaking the record, Hairston tied the mark with two home runs in the final two games of the regular season, ending a 10-game drought.
"Feels amazing to be a part of something in such a storied program," Hairston said. "It means the world to me."
Playing near his hometown of Queen Creek allowed his family and friends to witness the milestone.
