The giant aluminum paddle shifters are real metal, not fake. They create a sense of occasion every time your fingers brush them.

Alfa even embossed its logo into the wireless charging pad.

Physical climate controls survive here, and they deserve applause in today's touchscreen-obsessed world. They're easy to find and use.

But the steering wheel switchgear feels cheap. The shifter lacks heft.

Several plastics around the cabin don't scream Italian luxury. Context matters, though: this isn't a $70,000 SUV.

Many people see the Alfa badge and assume it costs more than it does.

The Tonale carries that premium perception while costing roughly what mainstream crossovers do when loaded up.

The infotainment screen feels small by modern standards, but the system works fine. This car prioritizes driving over screen real estate.

Rear seat passengers may have stronger complaints. Space is tight, and the cabin doesn't feel as spacious as some rivals.

Driving: Finally an Alfa

The real magic happens on the road.

The Tonale's chassis is lively, the steering is accurate, and it encourages you to take the long way home.

It's not outrageously fast.

The 2.0-liter turbo four produces 268 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, good for 0-60 in 6.5 seconds.

There are quicker crossovers, but few feel this engaging.

The nine-speed automatic is the weak link. It's lazy and sometimes hesitates.

But the paddle shifters help you take control.

Fuel economy is decent: 21 city, 29 highway, 24 combined. Cargo space is 27 cubic feet behind the second row.

Pricing starts at $46,035 for the Hybrid and $52,730 for the Tributo Italiano Edition, plus $1,995 destination.

That's a far cry from the old PHEV's $60,000-plus.

The 2026 Tonale isn't perfect. But it finally feels like a real Alfa Romeo.

It's fun, characterful, and priced to compete. That's a winning combination.
