Diamondbacks starter Mike Soroka allowed one run on four hits over six innings.
He escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the fifth inning by limiting Colorado to a sacrifice fly from Jake McCarthy.
Arizona preserved its lead in the seventh with defensive catches from Corbin Carroll and Ryan Waldschmidt.
The Rockies tied the game in the eighth inning when Rumfield hit an RBI double off Juan Morillo to score Hunter Goodman.
Reliever Antonio Senzatela earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings, while Thompson took the loss.
"It was an awesome job by [Thompson] hitting a double there," Stevens said.
"Then I don't think I could have drawn it up much better by driving him in."
Stevens expressed satisfaction with his first major league RBI. "I couldn't ask for much more," he said.
