Mercedes driver George Russell clinched his second victory of the 2026 season from pole position at the action-packed Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, June 28.

Russell maintained his lead for most of the 71-lap race despite a late-race charge from Red Bull's Max Verstappen, who finished second.

Verstappen recovered from a fifth-place starting position after a dramatic crash during Saturday's qualifying session.

The victory allowed Russell to narrow his championship deficit to his teammate Kimi Antonelli, who finished third to complete a podium separated by just two seconds.

Temperatures soared during the weekend, reaching 33 degrees Celsius in the air and over 50 degrees on the asphalt during qualifying, causing higher tire degradation than teams predicted.

Qualifying Drama and Race Highlights

The qualifying session concluded with drama when Verstappen lost grip and crashed in the penultimate corner.

Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff commented on the race directory's investigation into whether Russell slowed down sufficiently during the resulting yellow flag.

During the Grand Prix, both Ferrari drivers endured a disappointing afternoon as Lewis Hamilton finished fifth and Charles Leclerc finished eighth.

Hamilton initially overtook Leclerc for second at the start but fell back due to an early pit stop strategy during a virtual safety car phase caused by Carlos Sainz parking his Williams on the main straight.

McLaren's Oscar Piastri secured fourth place ahead of Hamilton, while Isack Hadjar of Red Bull finished sixth.

Defending world champion Lando Norris crossed the line in seventh, followed by Leclerc, and the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad rounded out the point-scoring positions.

The event saw four technical retirements, including both Cadillac drivers Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez within the first four laps, alongside Sainz and Aston Martin's Lance Stroll.
