The pundit pointed out that the squad had previously suffered severe defeats before establishing a consistent presence on the major international stage.

"You go right back to the start," Boyd said.

He acknowledged that public expectations had shifted rapidly during Clarke's tenure, leading to immediate judgment during these major finals.

"There were a few ropey performances in there, a few heavy defeats, and now all of sudden he's being judged at major tournaments," Boyd said.

Boyd maintained that Clarke's motivation for signing the long-term contract extension was fueled by the potential of the country's upcoming generation of players.

"Yes, there's disappointment at the level of performance at tournaments they've got to, whether it's the Euros or the World Cup," Boyd said.

He restated that simply reaching these tournaments remained an insurmountable task for Scottish football squads since the late twentieth century.

"But getting there has been a huge obstacle for a lot of managers and players from '98 until the Euros a few years ago," Boyd said.

Boyd suggested that the manager believed the national program possessed sufficient depth to secure qualification for future global tournaments.

"He wouldn't have signed a four-year deal if he felt Scotland had reached their max," Boyd said.

He expressed that Clarke viewed the incoming pool of talent as a viable foundation for continued international growth.

"I think he thought there was an opportunity," Boyd said.

Boyd further expressed that the recent wave of public backlash directed at the head coach was completely unwarranted given his historical achievements.
