"He felt there was enough youngsters coming through to give them a chance to qualify for the next World Cup," Boyd said.
He noted that while fans spent substantial financial resources to travel, prior generations of supporters lacked the opportunity because the team routinely failed to qualify.

"I think a lot of the criticism that has been flying around for the last three or four days has been an absolute disgrace for someone who has given a lot of Scotland fans the best time of their life in terms of following their country," Boyd said.
Boyd highlighted that Scotland's group stage opponents included world-class teams that presented immense competitive challenges.
"I get the fact the fans have spent a lot of money," Boyd said.
He reminded the public that the team faced elite international rosters during their brief campaign in the tournament.
"I understand that," Boyd said.
Boyd detailed that Brazil and Morocco were ranked sixth and seventh globally, respectively, making progression statistically difficult compared to other tournament groups.
"But there would have been people before ready to spend a lot of money, who weren't able to because the team didn't reach major tournaments," Boyd said.
He concluded his defense by putting the single group-stage victory against Haiti into a broader historical context for the national program.
"This team has reached major tournaments under Steve Clarke and he's still being criticised," Boyd said.
Boyd reiterated that the high ranking of their opponents made an advancement from the group stage highly improbable from the start.
