The National Weather Service issued Red Flag warnings and wind advisories across multiple western states on June 26, 2026, as high winds and low humidity levels created severe wildfire conditions.

Forecasters predicted southwest winds between 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching up to 55 mph, alongside relative humidity levels dropping as low as 5 to 15 percent.

Authorities noted that an ample supply of dry fuel from a snow-starved winter has left the region highly susceptible to rapid fire spread.

In southeastern Utah, the Cottonwood Fire has already burned over 70,000 acres.

In Southern Nevada, a sharp drop in temperature accompanied the high winds, pulling Friday temperatures down to 101 degrees from Thursday's high of 107 degrees at Harry Reid International Airport.

Meteorologists noted that temperatures would continue to hover in the 90s, well below the late June average of 103 degrees.

The National Weather Service warned that gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, and tree limbs could be blown down, potentially causing a few power outages.

Strong winds and rough waves on area lakes will create hazardous conditions for small craft.

The agency also highlighted the danger of extreme fire behavior resulting from the current dry weather setup.

"Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended," the National Weather Service added in a statement.

Officials emphasized that the combination of weather elements creates an immediate threat to public safety.
