"A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity (5 to 15 percent) and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior," the National Weather Service warned.

National Weather Service meteorologist Sam Meltzer explained that the sudden shift to cooler temperatures came from a specific atmospheric pattern.

"Pretty unusual for this time of year," said Meltzer.

He noted that a strong low pressure system was responsible for bringing the cooler air flow down from the coast.

"We usually see this type of event in the spring," he said.

In response to the extreme fire threats in Southern California, emergency management teams began coordinating resources.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection issued safety protocols for residents in high-risk zones like Death Valley National Park and the Mojave Desert.

"Be ready, and not reactive," the department said in a statement.

State officials urged communities to finalize their emergency strategies ahead of potential evacuations.

"Pack a go bag, sign up for emergency alerts, prepare your home for wildfire, and review your evacuation plan now," the department advised.

With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, fire officials also issued strict reminders regarding the use of personal pyrotechnics.

Illegal fireworks remain completely banned in major cities such as Los Angeles, San Diego, and Long Beach.

"Illegal fireworks can cause devastating burn injuries, spark wildfires, and carry serious criminal penalties, including fines and jail time," Cal Fire stated.

The agency concluded with a call for community responsibility during the upcoming national holiday.

"As we celebrate 250 years of this nation, let's honor it the right way by keeping California safe," the agency urged.

In New Mexico, hot and windy conditions continued through June 28, 2026, prompting additional Red Flag warnings for the West Central Highlands and northeastern sectors.
