Canadian tennis player Denis Shapovalov retired from his Wimbledon first-round match on Monday after sustaining a left shoulder injury from crashing into a courtside wall.

The Richmond Hill, Ontario native trailed Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 7-6 (7) when the accident forced him to withdraw from the tournament.

Shapovalov collided at high speed with the padded corner barrier on Court 6 while chasing a deep forehand late in the second set.

He received immediate assistance from the umpire and Carreno Busta before a physiotherapist administered medical treatment.

The Canadian attempted to continue playing but ultimately surrendered the second-set tiebreak 9-7 to his opponent.

The retirement handed Carreno Busta his first-ever career victory at the All England Club.

Following the collision, Shapovalov expressed his immediate distress to Carreno Busta on the court. "Sorry man, I think I f***ed it," he said.

Prior to the tournament, the 27-year-old reflected on his memorable 2021 Wimbledon semifinal run, where he faced Novak Djokovic after defeating Andy Murray.

"Yeah, I think that was a bit of the issue against Novak," Shapovalov said.

He detailed his mindset going into that high-stakes match.

"I kind of got an early break on him in that semi-final and before the match I thought okay, obviously against Novak I don't have many chances, but I'll try to see what I can do against him."
