Fleetwood noted that statistics and analytics are giving every player the opportunity to get closer to elite form.

Managing Expectations and Staying Present

Addressing the psychological pressures of elite sports, Fleetwood explained that managing internal expectations and maintaining focus during setbacks remains a constant learning process.

"I definitely don't think we're mentally unshakable — unless it's just me. I think managing your own expectations is maybe the hardest thing we deal with," he said.

He described staying present as an art form and a skill.

"When you look at the greatest of all time, they talk about how normal or natural all these feelings are, whether it's a negative emotion, whether it's getting ahead of yourself.

But being able to bring yourself back to that centre, that present moment, and play from there — that's everything."

Fleetwood emphasized that mistakes are part of growth.

"You should never be afraid of thinking the wrong way or getting something wrong, because at least then you can figure it out and put it right."

He stated that focusing strictly on preparation rather than unpredictable outcomes helps him stay anchored.

"Outcomes in sport can be very unpredictable — so if that's not entirely in your control, what is in your control is your preparation and your process."

Fleetwood described himself as process-driven, adding that enjoying the journey is crucial.

"You have to find the ability to enjoy the process while you're doing it, because at some point you look back and you can't do it anymore."
