Environment Canada confirmed a tornado touched down near Rossburn, Manitoba, on Sunday evening, June 28, 2026, as severe thunderstorms swept the province.

The storm system produced destructive wind gusts up to 100 km/h in Somerset and quarter-sized hail near Shell Valley, according to agency records.

Confirmation and Assessment

Meteorologist Shannon Moodie said the agency received multiple reports via social media and phone calls.

The Northern Tornadoes Project verified the tornado, and an assessment team will deploy to inspect the area and assign an intensity rating.

“We can say for sure a tornado happened there,” Moodie said, adding that structural damage is suspected.

Officials are also investigating a possible second tornado near Roblin based on unverified public accounts. The field team will extend its route to examine those reports.

“We don't have confirmation on this tornado as yet, but we did receive some reports,” Moodie noted.

Atmospheric Conditions

Sunday's atmospheric conditions were highly conducive to severe storms. A persistent southerly flow injected moisture northward, lowering cloud bases and creating wind shear that generated rotation.

“With that moisture, you get cloud bases that are quite low to the ground.

And then we had a lot of shear, which is really how the winds rotate through the atmosphere,” Moodie explained.

Unsettled weather is expected to continue across southern Manitoba through Canada Day on Wednesday, with additional showers and thunderstorms possible.
