Nationwide congressional redistricting could boost Republicans by three to 12 House seats as midterms approach, according to a report highlighted on HBO's comedy show.

In Texas, new maps signed by Governor Greg Abbott could increase the Republican majority from 25 to 30 seats out of 38.

Missouri, Louisiana, Florida, and North Carolina also altered boundaries to favor Republicans.
Conversely, California's Proposition 50 could cost Republicans five seats, while Virginia's aggressive changes were overruled by the state supreme court.
Television host John Oliver addressed the escalating dispute and its impact on minority representation during his broadcast.
Oliver noted that the potential gains are significant given the narrow margins of the previous election cycle.
"The last election gave them just a five-seat majority," he said.
He defined gerrymandering as the manipulation of maps to unfairly influence democratic outcomes, a practice that has been a problem in the US for centuries.
Oliver criticized the deeply flawed process of drawing districts in many states.

He highlighted Louisiana, where the map was altered to eliminate one of two majority-black districts after a legal challenge by 12 non-African American voters.
"Only one of the state's six districts is majority black, despite the fact that its population is around one-third black," Oliver said.
History shows that without majority-black districts, black candidates in Louisiana have no chance of being elected, he added.
Oliver warned that eliminating majority-minority districts across southern states could replicate the political conditions of the Jim Crow era.
"For those who fought so hard for their voting rights, watching them get stripped away this fast is brutal," he said.
To conclude, Oliver discussed potential legislative remedies, pointing to a House bill proposing 18-year term limits for Supreme Court justices.

"A new voting rights law isn't going to mean much if the supreme court just steps in to undo it," he said.
