Japan will face Brazil in the World Cup knockout stage on Monday, June 29, 2026, in Houston, as the Asian nation targets its first-ever victory in the tournament's advanced rounds.
Japan advanced to the round of 16 as group runner-up following a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands. Brazil topped their group ahead of Morocco, Scotland, and Haiti.

Moriyasu Recalls Previous Victory
Manager Hajime Moriyasu recalled his team's previous 3-2 victory over Brazil in Tokyo during a press conference in Houston.
"Then we realized we could win, even though everyone thought our chance was zero," said Moriyasu.
The manager noted that the previous victory served as a major turning point for the national team. "That was a moment when history changed," he said.
Moriyasu acknowledged that Brazil enters the match as favorites and with an extra day of rest, but maintained high ambitions for his squad.
"They are among the favorites for the world title in every tournament. People might laugh at us, but we also strive for the championship.

We want to make history again as the underdog," Moriyasu said.
Japan remains without forward Takefusa Kubo, who is restricted to individual training due to a knee injury sustained during the group stage.
"He will not play against Brazil. We hope he returns as soon as possible," Moriyasu said.
The manager also announced a change in his approach to potential penalty shootouts, contrasting with the 2022 tournament when players volunteered themselves before an elimination by Croatia.
