Defending champion Iga Swiatek secured her spot in the second round of Wimbledon after a hard-fought three-set victory over American Taylor Townsend on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, in London.

Townsend, the world number two in doubles, pushed Swiatek to the limit before the Polish star claimed her eighth consecutive match win at the All England Club with a final score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The opening set saw Townsend take an early lead, but Swiatek rallied to win six straight games and close out the set 6-1.

Townsend responded aggressively in the second set, breaking Swiatek early to build a 4-0 advantage and eventually winning 6-2 by exploiting Swiatek's service game and forcing double errors.

The deciding third set began with a grueling 12-minute service game where Swiatek saved four break points.

The set featured three consecutive breaks from a 3-2 baseline, with Swiatek ultimately prevailing 6-4.

Swiatek is scheduled to face Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova in the second round.

Polish Players Advance in Singles Draw

In the men's singles division, fellow Polish competitor Hubert Hurkacz advanced to the second round after defeating eleventh-seed Casper Ruud in straight sets.

Polish player Kamil Majchrzak also secured a straight-set victory against Chile's Alejandro Tabilo.

However, five Polish female singles players were eliminated in the early rounds.

Linda Klimovicova exited in the first qualifying round, while Katarzyna Kawa fell in the final stage of the qualification tournament.

Main draw losses included Magda Linette, Magdalena Frech, and Maja Chwalinska, who suffered an injury following her 2026 Roland Garros finals appearance.
