Congolese residents in North London gathered on West Green Road on July 1 to celebrate their national football team's historic World Cup run ahead of a highly anticipated round of 32 match against England.

The Seven Sisters neighborhood, a cultural hub for London's Congolese diaspora, saw a surge of optimism after the Democratic Republic of the Congo defeated Uzbekistan 3-1 to qualify for the next stage.

This match marks the country's first World Cup appearance in over 50 years, drawing local fans together in a vibrant display of national pride.

According to the 2021 census, London is home to approximately 11,000 Congolese residents, with a significant portion concentrated in the Seven Sisters area.

Community Voices

Davell Eden, a 32-year-old business owner who operates Eden Store on West Green Road, shared his perspective on the neighborhood's significance.

"This place is home for the Congolese who have moved over here. It's the area that accepted us as a whole to begin with," Eden said.

Eden expressed deep pride in the team's achievement, noting the unique significance this tournament holds for the community.

"We are excited to see Congo in the World Cup, and I'm super proud.

First time qualifying in 52 years, as a Congolese person, right now, it's the most amazing time to be alive," he said.

He acknowledged a split loyalty but emphasized his heart belongs to Congo.
