A rapidly intensifying weather disturbance in the western Pacific Ocean threatens to develop into a Category 5 equivalent super typhoon by Saturday.

Typhoon Bavi poses a direct threat to the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam.

According to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, the system organized quickly on Thursday over very warm ocean waters.

Forecasters expect the storm to pack maximum sustained winds reaching 250 kilometers per hour near its peak intensity.

Projected Path and Affected Areas

Meteorological models indicate that the powerful storm will likely maintain a steady westward trajectory after crossing the islands.

This track is projected to bring the system toward Taiwan and mainland China into next week.

The threatened region consists of two United States territories located east of Manila.

Guam has a population of around 170,000 people and a strategic military airport, while the Northern Mariana Islands house roughly 40,000 residents.
