Liberal shadow minister Sarah Henderson called the remarks "disrespectful to women, embarrassing to Australians, and demean the office of Prime Minister."

Liberal frontbencher Andrew Bragg said they were "beneath his office."

In response, the prime minister's office issued a brief statement on Monday morning: "I apologise unequivocally for the comments."

Labor government members defended Albanese, highlighting his support for Minogue and the administration's policy achievements.

Labor minister Tanya Plibersek told Channel Seven that being "a fan of Kylie Minogue… puts him in a group with millions of other Australians, including me."

Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles noted the podcast format was "different" from Albanese's usual media appearances, pointing to the government's gender-equality record.

Host Nikki Osborne shared on social media that other politicians would appear on future episodes, writing "wait until you see the next politician … Gotta keep it balanced right?!"

She appreciated the prime minister's willingness to engage in the unedited format: "They didn't ask for approval of the edit.

They just let me in, do the craziest political interview ever, then leave with comedy gold."
