Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese issued a public apology on Monday, July 6, 2026, following a wave of political backlash over his lighthearted responses during a comedy podcast interview.
Albanese faced severe criticism after taking part in a "shag, marry, date" game on the Bush Deep podcast, hosted by comedian Nikki Osborne, released last week.

The prime minister, married to Jodie Haydon for six months, initially hesitated before ranking celebrities Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, and Rhonda Burchmore.
"I've just got married, I'm only six months in," Albanese said.
Osborne coaxed him by saying "but if [marriage] goes tits up, let's just pretend," leading to his final choice.
"Kylie, clearly," Albanese responded.
When pressed further, he clarified his selection for all three categories: "all of the above… She's terrific."
During the same episode, Osborne asked about his personal life with his wife, using the phrase "bonking like rabbits."
Albanese replied, "Well, when we have time. After the footy.
It's always a good aphrodisiac, a Souths win."
Political Backlash
The remarks drew sharp criticism from opposition and independent politicians who argued the comments demeaned the office of the prime minister.
One Nation MP Barnaby Joyce said Albanese "has to be a bit cleverer" and "fell into a trap [that] a prime minister shouldn't fall into."
"We just can't answer questions like that," Joyce added.

Independent MP Zali Steggall told The Australian it was "entirely inappropriate for the prime minister to participate in such a game" and that he should have "push[ed] back, le[d] by example and call[ed] it out as sexist."
