The Cleveland Cavaliers have secured star guard Donovan Mitchell with a four-year, $273 million maximum contract extension, announced on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
The deal keeps the franchise’s salary cap flexible enough to pursue free-agent forward LeBron James.

According to Spotrac, the Cavaliers remain $20.5 million below the first luxury tax threshold after the extension.
This financial room allows the team to target James, who is entering free agency after eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Mitchell's Role in Roster Building
Mitchell, 29, chose not to wait until next summer, a decision that could have secured him a fifth year worth an additional $80 million.
Instead, he remains actively involved in helping Cleveland improve its roster.
ESPN's Shams Charania reported that Mitchell has played a significant part in the Cavaliers' conversations to upgrade the team and has been supportive of the front office.

This involvement has continued throughout the summer.
James's agent, Rich Paul, has listed Cleveland among multiple potential landing spots, including Miami, Philadelphia, and Boston. League executives are closely monitoring the situation as training camps approach.
ESPN's Brian Windhorst noted that rival franchises are left guessing about James's ultimate destination due to a lack of communication from his camp.
"Last I heard, the teams are kind of in the dark, all kind of waiting," Windhorst said.
Analysts Marc Stein and Jake Fischer described a potential reunion between James and the Cavaliers as "looking more and more like the scenario to beat."
