when federal agents attempted to conduct a vehicle stop on Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 35-year resident of the United States who worked in construction and did not possess legal status.
According to statements from the U. S.
Department of Homeland Security and an ICE spokesperson, Araujo attempted to evade arrest and used his vehicle aggressively against the responding personnel.
"From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer, resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense," stated the ICE spokesperson.
Medical personnel transported Araujo to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, where he was later pronounced dead.
Family members and civil rights organizations immediately disputed the federal government's account of the confrontation, noting that public images of the scene did not align with official narratives.
"My father, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a hardworking Mexican man, was the man killed this morning by ICE in the East End," wrote his son, Ronaldo Salgado, on Facebook.
"He was in the process of obtaining his work permit through the legal process," Salgado added.
