Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, expressed skepticism. "Stations selling at this price, it's not sustainable," De Haan said.
"Generally, when losses happen, somebody's got to pay for it."
De Haan suggested the operation might use corporate subsidies similar to previous telecom promotions.
"Someone is funding the difference, they're offering a lower price that's being subsidized by an unknown source," he said.
"It could be anyone funding this."
He dismissed the feasibility of driving national averages down to demanded levels. "It would be below cost for every single station in the country," De Haan said.
"There is not a single station that can profitably and sustainably sell gas at $2.50 a gallon.
