Actress Emmy Rossum detailed her long-running battle for equal pay on the Showtime drama series Shameless during an interview on the Call Her Daddy podcast released on July 8, 2026.
Rossum, who portrayed Fiona Gallagher for nine seasons, initially accepted a lower salary than costar William H. Macy due to his higher industry standing when the show premiered in 2011.

By the third season, her legal team believed her contributions justified equal compensation, though the initial request was denied.
Negotiations stalled again ahead of Season 8 despite Rossum gaining additional leverage by directing episodes of the John Wells-produced series.
"It's always scary asking for what you think you're worth.
To say, 'I think this is what I'm worth,' you have to take up space in the room," said Rossum.
The private contract dispute unexpectedly leaked to the public while Rossum was attending a writer's retreat, drawing widespread media attention and industry commentary.
"I was on a writer's retreat, and I was procrastinating, and I opened up Twitter, and it was a headline that we were in, like, a stalemate.
And I was shook," said Rossum.
The public reaction quickly altered the course of the negotiations as subsequent news articles expressed surprise that she was not already receiving equal pay.
"The tide really shifted," said Rossum. She noted that public support changed the momentum of the discussions.
"People seemed to write other articles immediately commenting on that, kind of being quite surprised that I wasn't already being paid equal," said Rossum.
